John Miller - Director

John made his first film on 8mm as a 10 year old and hasn’t looked back. A school report when 11 read; ‘if John pays as much attention to his school work as he does Star Wars then he will do very well’. His obsession with film reached new heights when he sold his comic collection to fund his trips to see Bladerunner. He went 11 times (it was a big comic collection).

Escaping from Staffordshire, he headed to the big smoke and studied for a drama degree in London, thinking he wanted to become an actor. But after three years of vomiting and unscheduled trips to the loo before getting on stage, he realised his strength lay in directing.

He has been a full time director for the last nine years and claims that his own acting experiences mean that he treats his actors very well.

In between directing loads of corporates, commercials and TV work, John followed up his first short film – Mashed (shot on Beta) with his first 35mm drama - Shopping for Love - in 1999. The film was made under the We3 umbrella, a film production company John set up with executive producer Jerry Vivian and writer/producer Guy de Beaujeu.

John went on to work with Peachy Films, directing 1980s comic icon Lynda Baron in another 35mm short The Sobering. He then got stuck into pre-production on No, but this was superseded by Living in Hope after No's main star was unable to give a firm commitment and Guy couldn’t raise enough dosh.

After Living in Hope, John directed Gatecrashers, a series he co-originated with Guy, for Carlton/ITV2. He then managed to squeeze in getting married to Sarah between editing the film and the series. A sneaky, if extreme way to ensure a good deal for the film (but one that even Guy thought beyond the call of duty) – Sarah works for Pink House, our post production facility.

He is 36 and lives in Pill, just outside Bristol with Molly (the cat) and Sarah (the wife).
